He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1926-1931 under Ferdinand Andri and Karl Fahringer; his works of the interwar period bore expressionist character. His models were initially Richard Gerstl and Edvard Munch. Later Hessing was influenced by Surrealism, Cubism and abstract painting. Under the Nazis he was banned from working. Later, in the circle of the "Phantasts" around Edgar Jené, he created dark, mystical works with a surreal touch. Gustav Hessing created oil paintings, watercolors, prints and tapestry designs, several of his works are in public collections in Vienna. He was a co-founder of the artists' association "Der Kreis" in 1946 and a member of the Secession from 1958-1960 and 1969 respectively. Hessing worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1967 to 1979. 1967 Prize of the City of Vienna for Fine Arts. 1979 Retrospective at the Austrian Gallery Belvedere. 1979: Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria.
