FERDINAND ROYBET (Uzès 1840-1920 Paris) The Fitting, Dressing for an Evening. Pencil on cream wove paper, squared in pencil. 330x420 mm; 13 1/8x16 1/2 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right recto. Roybet trained in Lyon and, during the 1860s, in Paris with the academic painter Jean-Georges Vibert (1840-1902). He had success in 1866 at the Paris Salon, selling one of his works to Mathilde Bonaparte, Napoleon's niece. She subsequently awarded him a commission for three canvases a month, specifying costumed figures, at an annual salary of 25,000 francs.
