Born in Tennessee, Keane initially sold her works under the name of her husband, Walter Keane. Following their divorce in 1965, she announced via radio that she was the true creator of the paintings, and successfully sued for defamation. Keane's life and works have been the subject of several Hollywood films, including Woody Allen's 1973 movie Sleeper, and Tim Burton's 2014 biopic Big Eyes. She lives and works in Napa County, CA.
