The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven) - 24 April, 2011 iPad drawing printed on paper 55 x 41.5 in (139.7 x 105.4 cm) Edition 19 of 25 David Hockney B. 1937, England, UK Since the beginning of his pioneering career, David Hockney has dedicated his painting practice to the exploration of the medium’s possibilities and limitations. Progressing from early experimentation with abstraction and extending to his trademark figurative and landscape work, Hockney employs vibrant, jewel-tone colors and formal compositions to question traditional perceptions of the world around him. He has an unflagging curiosity for new picturemaking techniques and technologies. In his early work, he used Polaroid film, color photocopies, and fax machines, and in 2009 he began sketching flower bouquets on his iPhone. Most recently for Hockney, the simplicity of the new iPad sketchbook tool allows the nature depicted within the landscape to shine. Though unmistakably digital, the medium encapsulates those qualities of landscape which have always been engaging for the artist, namely space and color. The technology-based art captures the contemporary reality of seeing, as filtered through screens. The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven) is part of a series of work drawn by Hockney on his iPad. He created the images “en plein-air” in his native Yorkshire between January 2011 and June 2011, and again in December 2011. Revisiting the same locations throughout the changing seasons, Hockney treated each approach as a renewed experience, instilling his drawings with a liveliness that transcends the physical realities of the landscape. Portraying the renewal of the English countryside upon the changing of winter into spring, The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven) mirrors Hockney’s continued renewal of practice. His enthusiastic embrace of changing technologies sets him apart from other contemporary painters and his penchant for rustic intimacy and distinct perspectives is modernized within the iPad series.
