Founded by William Copley, S.M.S. was a subscription-based series that intended to bypass the contemporary art market to make art accessible to anyone. Each portfolio contained approximately a dozen works of art, which was mailed bi-monthly for about one year. S.M.S.'s six issues consisted of "original reproductions" by artists from Man Ray to Bruce Nauman, and gave collectors affordable access to art for $125 per subscription.
