SIR JOHN GILBERT (1817-1897). "Study for St George, Cloth of Gold, Age is Youth, Victors'" pencil inscribed with titles and measurements of the finished works 22.6 x 18 cm together with two other pencil studies, 'His mother reading' and 'Henry VIII' three mounted together unframed FOOTNOTE: Sir John was knighted in 1872 for his artistic achievements. He was a member of the Royal Academy, and President of the Old Watercolour Society. Sir John exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, and many other European venues. He was nicknamed the Scott of Painting because of his preference for medieval chivalry subjects in his work.
