Remedios Varo Uranga (Mexico/France, 1908 - 1963) framed under glass graphite on paper drawing in a surrealistic depiction of a man playing an instrument. Measuring in frame 18'3/4" in height with width of 30-3/4", and having a sight image of 11-1/2" with width of 23-1/2". Unsigned, but complete with certificate of authenticity, see photographs. In overall good condition, all measurements are approximate. Provenance: from the estate of a prominent Texas and European collector. Maria de los Remedios Alicia Rodriga Varo y Uranga was born December 16, 1908 in Angles, a small town in the province of Girona, Spain. Her birth helped her mother recover from the death of another daughter, hence the extensive name. In 1924 she studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid. During the Spanish Civil War she fled to Paris where whe was greatly influenced by the surrealist movement. She met her second husband (after her death it was discovered that she had never divorced her first husband, painter Gerardo Lizarraga), the French surrealist poet Benjamin Pret, in Barcelona.
