A extremely rare Lester G. Hornby (1882-1956) Sunset Rock - A Portfolio of Pencil Sketches, 1924 Privately Published for Mrs. Henry P. King and John T. Spaulding, Esq. Sunset Rock - Prides Crossing - Massachusetts. This is was a very limited edition for the family and friends of the Spaulding family. Portfolio of 25 Prints featuring the grounds and gardens of the William Stuart Spaulding Estate, "Sunset Rock", Pride's Crossing, Beverly, Massachusetts. Measures 15"x17.50"x1.50" Weight is 8 pds 3 oz. PROVENANCE: a Charleston SC Private Estate. Hornby was one of the founders of the "Rockport School" (along with A. Thieme and A. T. Hibbard), and named the popular fish shack on Hansen's Wharf at Rockport, "Motif #1." He was a master etcher in the Whistlerian tradition and an accomplished watercolorist. Hornby received his early training at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League in New York. He then journeyed to Paris where he developed his technique further at the major art academies there. Hornbys progress was rapid, he received his first international recognition in Paris in the prestigious Salon dAutomne of 1907. Completely captivated by Paris and the French countryside, Hornby spent most of his productive years in France, returning intermittently to America. In his latter years, he played an active role as teacher and artist in the Rockport art colony, dying there at his cottage in 1956.Hornbys works are well represented in major public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Library of Congress, Corcoran, and the National Museum of American Art in Washington, Bibliotheque National in Paris, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
