LEÓN FERRARI Carta a un General. Pen and black ink on Fabriano laid paper, 1963. 481x311 mm; 18 7/8x12 1/4 inches. Signed, titled and dated "22/5/63" in pen and black ink, lower recto and inscribed "N-233" in pen and black ink, verso. Ferrari (1920-2013) was an Argentinian conceptual artist whose work addressed themes of religion, politics and language. Ferrari's Carta a un General series confronts issues of censorship and communication for soldiers relying on the written word. As a vocal leftist, Ferrari lived in exile in Brazil from 1976-1991 during Argentina's military dictatorship, following the disappearance of his son. In recent years, Ferrari has gained prestige as one of the most important contemporary Argentinian artists; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, presented his work in the 2009 exhibition "Tangled Alphabets."
