Pencil on paper Italy/England, 19th Century Gabriele Carelli (1821-1900) - Italian artist Signed lower left: “Gab Carelli” Fine studies of humans and animals Dimensions, framed: 49 x 44 cm Good condition This fine work is an appealing accumulation of fine studies by the renowned artist Gabriele Carelli from the 19υth Century. Carelli has put together a variety of studies of scenes that he captured on his many field trips to Africa and Asia. He has sketched out an Asian woman in a long robe with her hair up in a bun, a group of men with turbans sitting on the floor smoking a pipe or women carrying the washing in a basket on their head. These are just a few examples of the numerous little scenes that Carelli has skillfully captured on this paper. The drawings show the true talent of this artist in the way he has managed to depict the individual expressions. The drawings are in good condition with some signs of age. The paper has a few fine folds, especially in the lower left and is slightly brownish. The overall dimensions are 49 x 44 cm and without the frame the dimensions are 19.5 x 15.5 cm. It is signed lower left with “Gab Carelli. The drawing is nicely framed. Gabriele Carelli Gabriele Carelli was born in Naples and trained in Rome to where he had followed his brother Consalvo. Thereafter he spent most of his life in England. The father introduced him to influential patrons, who helped establish him as an artist in the British capital. In 1847 Carelli became a member of the Royal Academy and exhibited regularly in London until his death. From 1880 onwards Queen Victoria was one of his most important benefactors. The artist is most famous today for his small watercolours, which were created during his travels through Europe and North Africa.
