One of the sheets bears the dedication: ‘Die allerherzlichsten Glückwünsche liebe Lisl Frei (?) Ihnen von Ihrem Max Schwimmer’ [Good wishes dear Lisl Frei (?), yours Max Schwimmer]; on the second sheet it reads: ’Fröhliche Ostern liebe Lisl, Ihnen und Ihren lieben allen! Herzlichst*** Max S.’ [Happy Easter dear Lisl, to you and all your beloved ones! Warmly *** Max S.] Condition: The sheets have been examined in framed condition. They have been float mounted on cardboard within mat windows. They are in good condition, according to age. The ink has slightly faded on one sheet. The framing has minor wear. The dimensions of the sheets are 14.2 x 10.5 cm resp. 14.5 x 10.5 cm, while the frame measures 28.5 x 34.5 cm. Max Schwimmer (1895-1960) Born in Leipzig, Max Schwimmer studied art history and philosophy at the University of Leipzig from 1919. He was active in the anti-bourgeois cabaret scene and worked for satirical magazines. In the 1920s, he began teaching at the School of Applied Arts in Leipzig, which he had to give up in the era of National Socialism. After some of his works were confiscated as degenerate, he turned to book illustration. After the war, he became a professor of graphic art at the Staatliche Akademie für Graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe; in 1951, he was appointed to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. From 1952, he was a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. The artist's estate is located in the Staatsbibliothek of Leipzig.
