Georg Tappert (1880-1957) Born in Berlin, Tappert grew up in Berlin on the former entertainment mile Friedrichstrasse. From 1900 to 1903, he studied at the Großherzoglich Badische Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe, amongst others under the guidance of Ludwig Schmid-Reutte and Carl Langhein. From 1905, he worked as a freelance artist in Berlin and exhibited his works at the prestigious gallery of Paul Cassirer. From 1906 to 1909, he ran a private art school in Worpswede. He became acquainted with Paula Modersohn-Becker, who influenced him artistically. In 1910, he returned to Berlin and co-founded the New Secession, including members like Max Pechstein, Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky. He exhibited with the Blaue Reiter in Munich and became a teacher at the Royal Art School in Berlin in 1913. In the 1920s and 1930s, Tappert created increasingly depictions of the urban life in an expressive-realistic style of painting. During World War II, he was banned from painting and exhibiting, and he lost his teaching position. Around 100 of his works were destroyed. In 1945, he was involved in the reconstruction of the Berliner Hochschule der Künste under the direction of Karl Hofer. Tappert's artistic estate is preserved at Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig.
