Otto Greis (1913-2001) Born in Frankfurt, the painter Otto Greis studied painting and drawing with Johann Heinrich Höhl at the Städelschule. After World War Second, he made the acquaintance of Ernst Wilhelm Nay, one of the most important exponents of abstract painting in the postwar era, who would have a great impact on his work, as well as Paul Klee and Paul Cézanne. After the CoBrA exhibition in Liege in 1951, the artist started to paint in an informal style of painting. Along with K. O. Goetz, Heinz Kreutz and Bernard Schultze, he became one of the major exponents of Informalism in Germany. Mid-1950s, he formed his very own style, influenced by primitive art. In 1957, Greis moved to France, until he went back to Germany in 1984. Greis has exhibited his work at the documenta II in Kassel, as well as in numerous major German museums.
