MARSDEN HARTLEY (AMERICAN, 1877-1943) - ''Rock Bound Coast''; Pastel; Signed lower right ''M.H.''; framed under glass; Measures: Visible Art 20''H x 13''W, Frame 21.5''H x 14.5''W - one of Maine’s greatest modern painters, Marsden Hartley. Born in Lewiston in 1877, Marsden Hartley’s early years in Maine were a struggle. He left Maine and lived in Europe, New Mexico, New York, California, and Massachusetts. His life was full of travel, education and dedication to his art, which consisted of painting, poetry, and essays. He returned to Maine in 1937 and lived here until his death in Ellsworth in 1943. His ashes were spread on the Androscoggin River.Condition: Age appropriate wear ; All items sold as is.
