Together with Ludwig Dill and Arthur Langhammer, he founded the Dachau Painting School. He was also a co-founder of both the Munich Secession and the Vienna Secession and is thus regarded as pioneer of modernism. He increasingly turned away from naturalistic imagery, in favor of abstract compositions. In 1916, the Hölzel-Circle was founded, consisting of his pupils and followers.
