Gogol's "Dead Souls", ink, charcoal, and pencil on paper 26.5 x 20 cm (10 3/8 x 7 7/8 in.) each [sight] one signed lower left, the other lower right LOT NOTES Having studied under Zouglinsky at the Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow, Georges de Pogedaieff went on to become very well known both in Russia and in Europe for his portraits, costume and set designs, and the theatre. He designed sets for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and numerous other theatres across Europe. Pogedaieff was equally as well known for his illustrations for literary works by Russian authors, including Chekhov, Dostoyevsky, and Gogol, splendid examples of which form the present lot.
