Adolph Menzel is often considered a Prussian artist par excellence, even though the artist was largely determined by his short statue of approximately 1.40 m and his withdrawal from military service. Besides, Menzel not only painted heroic exploits, but also focused on ordinary workers in Berlin, as seen in his famous painting 'Das Eisenwalzwerk' (The Iron Rolling Mill) from 1872-75. His drawing oeuvre comprises a large number of figure studies in which he dealt with the depiction of movement, physiognomy and garment. The present sheet represents a typical sketch of the artist: Through to blurred contours along the women's face and body he achieved impressive light- and shadow effects lending the study an additional picturesque aspect. Condition: The painting is in very good condition considering its age. The lower right corner is only affected by a few scattered stains. Besides, the left edge reveals a small restored tear. The work is matted and measures 20.3 x 12.6 cm. The wooden stucco frame is well-preserved and only shows a few faint marks with small material losses. The frame is fitted with a glass pane and measures 50 x 58.5 cm. Adolph von Menzel (1815-1905) Adolph Menzel was born as the son of a lithographer in Wrocław. In 1830 the family moved to Berlin, presumably due to the prospect of a better education for their talented child. Menzel's father died only two years later, so the young boy felt obliged to take over the family business. Nevertheless, Menzel briefly attended the Academy of Arts in Berlin and finally decided to become a self-taught artist. In 1853, Menzel became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, which was followed by his appointment as professor in 1856. When Menzel painted the coronation of Wilhelm I in 1861, he was promptly accepted by the fine courtly society. Menzel died in 1905 and was honored by Wilhelm II, who arranged a state funeral and followed the coffin with his family. Examples of Menzel's artistic output are mainly preserved in museums, including the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
