However Flavin was also active as a serious draftsman and deeply related to the gestural works of Abstract Expressionism. His early drawings and watercolors date back to the late 1950s, when Flavin recorded his impressions of the Hudson River and the beaches of Long Island. In the 1980s, Flavin focused on the depiction of sailing boats, characterized by a reduced and highly atmospheric style. Usually working in series, Flavin tried to capture his motifs from the same point of view. The present lithograph was printed with black and blue ink and initially belonged to a three-part work, titled 'Sails'. It reveals one of Flavin's characteristic sailing motifs and seems to be inspired by artists such as Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning, whose works were interestingly also included in Flavin's private art collection. The dynamic of the present motif is beautifully emphasized by the shape of the wooden frame. The work is signed and dated with pencil lower right 'Dan Flavin 86' as well as inscribed 'of 40'. The backside of the frame is fitted with a label by Galerie Hubert Winter, Vienna. The work is mounted on the backing cardboard of the frame. The sheet is in good condition; only faint superficial abrasions in the upper center. The frame is in good condition with small traces of wear. The depiction measures c. 20 x 36 cm and the sheet 24.5 x 76 cm. The framed overall dimensions are 36.5 x 95 cm. Dan Flavin (1933-1996) Dan Flavin was born in New York, where he was initially employed as a meteorologist by the US Air Force. Following a deep interest in the arts, Flavin additionally studied art history at the Columbia University, between 1957 and 1959. His early works were exhibited at the Judson Gallery in New York in 1961. In the same year, Flavin created his first works with electric light. Since 1964, Flavin mainly focused on installations with fluorescent light. Flavin was represented at major art exhibitions in the world, including, for instance, the documenta 4 in Kassel. Examples of his artistic output are represented in museums such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Tate Gallery in London and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
