Pencil on artist sketch paper France, around 1910 Hans Purrmann (1880-1966) - German painter and graphic artist Signed lower right 'Purrmann' In white gold colored wooden frame Dimensions: 28.9 x 37.9 cm Good condition Brilliant nude study by the German painter Hans Purrmann; nude studies by the artist fetch up to €4,700 at international auctions This sketch by the German painter Hans Purrmann, executed in rapid strokes, shows a female nude lying on the stomach and reading in a book with arms propped. The composition is confidently executed and shows Purrmann's drawing skills. The pencil drawing is signed lower right 'Purrmann'. The sheet is slightly darkened due to age and bears occasional small paper losses at the upper edge and occasional tiny defects. It is mounted onto the backing board at the upper sheet edge and is overall in good, age-appropriate condition. The frame is in good condition with only slight signs of wear. The sheet measures 28.9 x 37.9 cm. The framed dimensions are 50 x 59 cm. Hans Purrmann (1880 - 1966) Hans Purrmann was born in Speyer. In his father's painting business, he first learned the craft of painting and later attended the School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe. From 1900 to 1905 he studied at the Art Academy in Munich under Franz von Stuck and Gabriel von Hackl. Despite initial artistic success in Germany Purrmann moved to Paris in 1906 where he met Henri Matisse. This was his teacher and friend and helped him to find his own style. Back in Germany Purrmann fled in 1935 from the threat of the Nazis to Florence, where he became head of the Villa Romana. In 1943 he also had to flee from there and found in 1944 a new home in Montagnola, Switzerland. Hans Purrmann exerted a great influence on many younger painters. He received many honors and awards, among others, in 1964, the great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany with Star.
