Pastel 1988 Hughes Claude Pissarro (French, b. 1935) 'La Masionette du Pêcheur au Bord de la Visane' Signed lower left 'H. Good condition Provenance: Jane Kahan Gallery, New York This pastel by Hughes Claude Pissarro depicts the subject of the title: a fisherman's cottage on the bank of Visan, France. The landscape is rendered in the artist's Impressionistic style, with the use of bight pastels. The stream divides the land along the left side and as it grows deeper into the background it becomes lost in the bright blue sky. To the right of the stream is a cottage drawn in earth tones and below are figures in contrasting blue and red. "La Masoinette du Pêcheur au Bord de la Visan" was executed in 1988 and measures 9 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches. The pastel is signed in the lower left, and signed, titled and inscribed, verso. Hinged to mat in upper two corners; handling soiling along all edges; otherwise appears in basic good condition. Hughes Claude Pissarro (French, B. 1935) Hughes Claude Pissarro was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France on November 9, 1935. The son of Paulemile Pissarro, the youngest son of Camille Pissarro, his style and technique is reminiscent of his upbringing. Hughes Claude Pissarro studied at the Ecole du Musée du Louvre and the Ecole Normale Supérieur. At the age of 24, he was commissioned by the White House to paint a portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. His work has been exhibited throughout the world and amongst his many awards he has won the Grand Prix des Peinture de Deauville and the Grand Prix de Printemps des Cannes in 1974 and the Medaille d'or, Prize Leonardo da Vinci in 1988. His work is currently in the collections of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England, the Barron Gerard Museum in Bayeux, France and the Pissarro Museum in Tokyo, Japan.
