Ink on paper Germany, circa 1965 A.R. Penck (b. 1939) - German painter and printmaker Signed in ink lower right, 'Ralf' Mounted in a black wooden frame Overall dimensions, framed: 44.2 x 37 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany An early work of the famous German artist; his works from the early period are rarely found in the art market The present pen and ink drawing is an early work of A.R. Penck, dated circa 1965. It depicts a breast portrait of a seated woman, supporting her head on her right arm. The drawing is characterized by dynamic strokes. The spontaneity in the figure can also be found in the background, which was only vaguely indicated by the artist. The physiognomy of the woman is of particular importance in the drawing. Despite the sketchy execution of the work, the portrait shows a striking closeness to life. The sheet is signed lower right, 'Ralf', and mounted in a black wooden frame. It is in good overall condition with a light browning of the paper, as well as mounting and light crease marks. The wooden frame shows some wear consistent with age. The overall dimensions, framed, are 44.2 x 37 cm. The paper is 21 x 14.5 cm in size. A. R. Penck (b. 1939) Born in Dresden in 1939, the painter and sculptor Ralf Winkler adopted several pseudonyms. 'A. R. Penck' was the name that followed through and that he is today famous for. He started taking drawing lessons with Strawalde. In the early 1950s, he was trained as an advertising artist. In 1966, he adopted the pseudonym 'A. R. Penck'. As off 1973, he also signed his works with 'Mike Hammer', 'T. M.' or 'Y.'. Whilst his work was under various restrictions in the German Democratic Republic, he received the Wilhelm-Grohmann Award from the Academy of Arts in West Berlin in 1975. In 1976, he made the acquaintance of the artist Jörg Immendorff, with whom he collaborated for a few years. In 1980, Penck moved to West Germany. Three years later, he settled in London, and in 1988 he moved to Düsseldorf for a job as a professor for painting at the Academy of Arts. After his retirement in 2003, he settled in Dublin, where he lives and works today. Works by A.R. Penck are on display in major museums collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt/Main, the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
