SEAN KEATING, (Ireland, 1889-1977); A Study for "The Tipperary Hurler", charcoal drawing, signed lower right, circa 1930s, David Bendanns of Baltimore label verso. The finished painting is in the collection of the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art on Parnell Square, Dublin. In gold and black frame, matted and glazed. OS: 29 1/4" x 26 1/4". SS: 19" x 16 1/2". Fine condition. The portrait depicts Ben O'Hickey, a fellow student of Keating's at the Metropolitan Art School in the 1930's, wearing a Galtee Rovers uniform. O'Hickey (1899-1964), was a very active IRA man, who at one point in the 1920's was sentenced to death, but had his execution commuted on the morning it was to be carried out.
