It is a beautiful dynamic study, executed in spontaneous dynamic strokes. Two ladies are sitting in chairs opposite to each other and are seemingly engrossed in a conversation that the observer from behind curiously beholds, if he is not even overhearing it. The sheet is signed lower right 'Orlik' and is in good condition. The left edge was torn unevenly from a sketchbook by the artist. There are few traces of old mounting on the upper back side. Otherwise the work is overall of very good condition. The frame also shows slight signs of use. The sheet measures 16.5 x 10.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 32.5 x 28 cm. Emil Orlik (1870-1932) Emil Orlik was born in Prague as the son of a master tailor and initially studied at the private painting school of Heinrich Knirr in Munich as well as the Academy of Fine Arts there. He returned to Prague in 1894. He was strongly influenced by a journey to Japan in 1900/1901; when he returned to Europe, he moved to Vienna and joined the Vienna Secession. A year later Orlik was called on to be a professor at the state school of the Berlin museum of applied arts and was appointed as head of the graphic art class. Among his students were George Grosz, Hannah Höch, Oskar Nerlinger and Josef Fenneker. Orlik was active in Berlin throughout his life, although he frequently undertook trips abroad among others to China, Korea and Japan.
