Originally drawn as an illustration of the character Miles Bjornstrom, the "Red Swede," for a special edition of Sinclair Lewis' "Main Street" published in 1937. After completing this drawing, Wood revised his concept for the character, producing a less compassionate portrait of Bjornstrom, which was the version ultimately published. Graphite, colored pencil, chalk and ink on brown paper, 20 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches, sight. Signed and dated "Grant Wood - 1936 ©," l.r. Provenance: - Nan Wood Graham, the artist's sister. Exhibited as part of her collection of Grant Wood's early work by the Riverside Art Association, California, then donated by Graham to the Association and sold in 1962. - The Vincent Price Collection of Fine Art, Sears, Roebuck and Co., circa 1962-1971.
