작품 상세
Stanislaw Witkiewicz (Polish, 1885-1939), Portrait pastel and charcoal on brown paper, portrait of a gentleman with piercing green eyes and a checkered suit, signed and inscribed at lower left "Witkacy / (T. B+E) / 1931 / IX / NP / N (illegible) + (F B.2)," framed under glass. SS 22 x 17.5 in.; DOA 25 x 21 in. Born Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz in Warsaw, he began using the name Witkacy to distinguish himself from his accomplished father, his namesake, and a painter, architect, and art critic. After a sojourn in Russia as an officer in the Imperial Army, he returned to Poland where his artistic nature flourished. He was an author, photographer, and dramatist, associated with the "Formists," but his portraits paid the bills. In 1924 he established the Portrait Firm of S. I. Witkiewicz and called himself an "old whore-portraitist." His portraits capture unique physical and mental states of both the sitter and himself. Collection of Peter Keil, Miami, FL Collection of Mr. Gunther Boxler No apparent condition concerns.
