Mario Carreño, Untitled. Mario Carreño Morales (Cuban 1913 – 1999), Untitled. Enchanting Cubist composition, two lovers, a woman in blue symbolic of the moon and a man and guitar in colors symbolic of the day, embrace under a sky that is night above and day below, the dark frame-like border suggesting a scene intentionally frozen for perpetuity in a frame. This is a wonderful example of Carreno’s ability to abstract the movement and emotion of the human form and imply them emphatically and perfectly with geometric shapes, texture and color. Signed and dated 'Carreño- 47' (lower left). Year: 1947. Medium: gouache and graphite on paper. 23 x 17.5”.
