It depicts a sensually loaded graphic convolution of body and animal in pencil and colour pencil on paper. A colourful crocodile of ornate lines flows into the body of a woman. The sheet depicts the typical style of Janssen with humorous writing, like the ambivalent title 'Ein Ein-maliges Krokodyl' ('A Unique Crocodile'), or the description 'Quatschi Quatschi / Adolf ist glücklich / Maria wird glücklich / Euer Janssen / Ich wünsche Euch Glück' ('Nonsense nonsense / Adolf is happy / Maria will be happy / Yours Janssen / I wish you the best of luck'. Clearly this work was a personal wedding gift from Janssen, which also becomes visible through the incorporated wedding rings found at the crocodile's snout or the two Qs. The drawing 'Ein Ein-maliges Krokodyl' ('A Unique Crocodile'), by Horst Janssen is dated, signed and titled '22.4.70 / Janssen / Ein Ein-maliges Krokodyl', as well as described 'Quatschi Quatschi / Adolf ist glücklich / Maria wird glücklich / Euer Janssen / Ich wünsche Euch Glück'. The sheet is mounted in a mat and a dark brown wooden frame. The sheet is browned and extensively foxed due to water damage. The sheet dimensions are ca. 33 x 49 cm, and the total dimensions of the work, including the frame, are 42 x 57 cm. Horst Janssen (1929-1995) Horst Janssen was a German artist with a focus on drawing and printed graphic work. Horst Janssen's extraordinary talent as an artist was revealed during his childhood. In 1946, he began his studies at the National Art School in Hamburg. From the beginning on, he enrolled as a student in the master class of Alfred Mahlau. Janssen's first drawing was published in 1947 in the weekly newspaper 'Die Zeit'. In 1952, he received the Hamburg Lichtwark scholarship. A year before, he had been released from the country's art school with no academic degree. The Kunsthalle Hamburg has set up the Horst-Janssen cabinet in 1997. Lamme Janssen and Angelika Gerlach opened the Horst Janssen Library in 2008 in Hamburg. The estate of the artist is managed by the Horst Janssen Museum, which opened in 2000 in Oldenburg.
