Literature: Lisa N. Peters in Carol Lowrey and Lisa Peters, Works on Paper 2008, exh. cat. (New York: Spanierman Gallery, 2008), pp.110-111 color illus., no. 53 After the mid-1910s, Glackens turned from urban subject matter to create vividly colored, Impressionist-inspired figures in the studio in the manner of Renoir. Thus this image, rendered about 1922, is a rare instance of his return to his earlier preoccupation. The work depicts the park located along on a bluff above the East River now known as Carl Schurz Park. Glackens had depicted the site in East River Park (circa 1902, Brooklyn Museum of Art), but in this instance he abandoned the rich tonal palette and dark style of his earlier art. Whereas in East River Park, he had emphasized the industrialization of the harbor in the background, here he showed the park as a fashionable and desirable enclave for upper-class residents who had left behind downtown's immigrant-filled neighborhoods C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
