Pencil and coloured pencil Horst Janssen (1929-1995) - German illustrator and graphic artist Signed, dated and titled on lower edge Dimensions, framed: 58.5 x 49.5 cm Drawings by Horst Janssen fetch up to 20,000 euros at international auctions Very good condition This figurative drawing by Horst Janssen from 1971 shows a young woman wearing only a cardigan. The adverted eyes and the face covered by the long hair allow the viewer a peek of the barely covered female body. Building on the chasteness and innocence of its subject the work emanates a subtle eroticism. The drawing is in good condition even though the frame shows some signs of use such as colour and material loss. The work is glued onto paper with the upper edges, into a mount, and framed behind glass. The drawing paper used is an old document from 1821, which is inscribed on the back. The work is signed, dated "14 1 71" and titled "Panne" ("Mishap"). The overall dimensions are 58.5 x 49.5 cm. The unframed work measures 33.8 x 18.5 cm. Horst Janssen (1929-1995) Horst Janssen was born 1929 in Hamburg and began his studies after the Second World War at the Landeskunstschule Hamburg (today the Hochschule für bildende Künste) and was a master pupil of the graphic artist Alfred Mahlau (1894-1967). After Janssens first illustration was published in 1947 in the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit", he began illustrating children's books and produced mostly woodcuts. In the 1960s, his work received larger recognition and his hand drawings, woodcuts, lithographs and etches were shown in a major exhibition. In the following years, Janssen's works became internationally known and today, numerous of his works can be viewed in the Kunsthalle Hamburg and the Horst-Janssen-Museum opened in 2000 in Oldenburg, the town where the artist spent his childhood.
