MARY CASSATT (American, 1844-1926) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN (POSSIBLY ALEXANDER CASSATT) pencil on paper; signed Mary Cassatt, l.r., initialed MC, l.l.; sight: 10 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches Provenance: Gift of Daniel Garber to Dorothy Cox, 1920's; Private Collection. Other Notes: A note on the verso of the work written by Dorothy Cox's husband states that the drawing was given to Dorothy in the early 1920's while she was a student of Daniel Garber's at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The letter identifies the sitter as the brother of the artist. Mary Cassatt was a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1861-1865. Her brother, Alexander Cassatt, went on to be the seventh president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Daniel Garber was a student of the Academy from 1899-1905 and went on to teach there for forty years. Dorothy Cox, an artist and dress designer, studied under Garber in the 1920's. No information regarding how Garber acquired the drawing could be found.
