Monotype Great Britain, London, 1995 Tracey Emin (b. 1963) - internationally successful British artist Signed and dated (in pencil), lower left: "Can't have it all", lower right: "Tracey Emin 1995" Overall dimensions, framed: 42.5 x 53.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: Berlin Private Collection Young British Artist - a term that always fascinates and is forever connected with the name Tracey Emin, the English Wild Child of the arts whose works are constant provocation. Comparable monotypes by her fetch up to 8.000 Euros at international auctions. This monotype "Can't have it all" from 1995 was made by the renowned British artist Tracey Emin. The print depicts a primitively drawn naked figure of a female, which looks out onto the viewer with an emotionless expression. Next to the figure she seems to have just placed a larger scribble, but on close inspection a seated female can be seen through the scribble. Below these two figures, Emin has placed the phrase "CAN'T HAVE IT ALL". With a fairly restricted pictorial language and the use of a rapid notion, Emin successfully manages to capture her feelings towards a consumer society. The two female figures, one naked, the other clothed seem to represent each other's opposites. The one might not have the possibilities to surround herself with material goods, or deliberately chooses not to, whilst the seated figure seems to be engulfed in this world in which material artefacts are prioritized. "Can't have it all" relates not only to materialism but also to the sentimental needs that people carry within them and that cannot always be satisfied. In the end even the person that has turned its back on a capitalist society still stands bare, with needs that cannot always be fulfilled. This work of art is a monotype which is a form of printmaking that can only be made once. It is a rapid way of printing and can be used on different kinds of paper as well as on fabrics. A plate, usually from glass, is painted with colours. A sheet is placed onto the plate whilst the colours are still wet and with the help of a lot of pressure, generally thanks to a roller, the wet colour is transferred onto the sheet. As the colour is thus lost from the plate, there can only be one print made from every plate and a monotype is thus as unique as a painting. In 1997 Tracey Emin described the process of monotyping as follows: "I like it a lot because of its magic - you never know what the print is going to be like when you turn it over." The monotype by Tracey Emin is in very good condition. The dimensions, framed are 42.5 cm x 53.5 cm (16.7 x 21 in) and the sheet's dimensions are 29.5 x 42 cm (11.6 x 16.5 in).
