작품 상세
Goltzius, H. (1558-1617). The Wedding of Cupid and Psyche. Engraving after BARTHOLOMEUS SPRANGER, consisting of 3 plates, together measuring ±43x85 cm., with "Barto[lome]us Sprangers Ant[werpi]us Inven. Anno 1587" and "HGoltzius sculp. et excud." engr. at bottom right of the third print, each print w. 4-line Latin text in 3 columns engr. below the image. - Beautiful sharp impressions on paper with the coat of arms of Burgundy-Austria. The sheets not joined, but each w. professionally attached margins for handling. In (very) fine condition (the first print vaguely yellowed in upper left corner; the second print w. a tiny closed marginal tear; the third print a sm. closed tear in upper margin; a few tiny stains); all prints with the collector's stamp "S.J. Robitsch 's Gravenhage" on verso (not in Lugt). = Hollstein 341, the second state (of 4), with the renewed dedication (to Siegmund Rumpf, chancellor of Rudolph II). The prepatory drawings by Spranger are nowadays kept at the Rijksmuseum. "After Goltzius had a few trial runs at translating relatively simple designs by Bartholomeus Spranger into print, the two artists must have realised that the time had come to attempt something of a different order. This spectactular piece of compositional bravura is the happy result of that decision. (...) The eddying figures lend vibrancy to the engraving, particularly in fine impressions with the correct distribution of light and shade, which are unfortunately very rare." (Ger Luijten in: Dawn of the Golden Age (Amst., 1993), p.330-331). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXIII.
