Jules Pascin French, 1885-1930 Les Amoureux Signed Pascin (lr) Watercolor and pencil on paper 10 3/4 x 12 3/8 inches Provenance: The artist Private collection, Paris, mid-1920s By descent in the family, to present owner Pascin acquired an international reputation for his lyrical, intimate, and oftimes highly sensuous depictions of women. Admirers of his work included many American artists, among them the painter Raphael Soyer, who described Pascin's oils, watercolors and drawings as "inimitable . . . . I never cease to wonder at the profound grace and simplicity of line, their originality and the . . . psychological aspect of their content." Here Pascin avoids detail in favor of a subtle manipulation of line and color, defining his subjects through a series of soft, flowing outlines of blue, pink, and ochre and adding luminous washes of these same tonalities to render volume and form.
