The Rütli Oath of 1291 is the foundation-marker of Switzerland, where representatives from the Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden cantons met on the Rütli Meadow, a mountain meadow on Lake Lucerne, to swear a pact of mutual defence against threats. The Oath led to the subsequent establishment of the Swiss Confederation and is celebrated on 1 August each year, a public holiday
