Mother and Child signed and dated 1973 brass without base: H: 21 1/2" (55 cm) L: 6" (15 cm) W: 5 3/4" (15 cm) with base: H: 23" (58 cm) L: 6" (15 cm) W: 6" (15 cm) Over the years and across diverse styles and mediums, the mother and child have been a recurring motif, an artist traversing through this subject at least once in their lives. This practice reflects our deep, timeless relationship with our mothers and pays tribute to their love and affection. Tomas Concepcion, an artist renowned for his exemplary bronze sculptures, also explored this theme in this 1973 23-inch work, albeit in brass. Like Saprid, Concepcion has a knack for capturing frozen-in-time moments in his sculptures, the majority of which depict anguish and yearning. He was born in Marawi City, but left to study painting and design in San Francisco and later in Canada. Eager to develop his skills and talents, he ventured into Europe, seeking new inspiration. He painted on the streets of Paris for several months, then lingered for a bit in Marseille, before boarding a train bound for Rome. He fell in love with Rome's vibrant art scene and its impeccable monuments and sculptures. Charmed, he set up an art studio and made this city his home for the following years. Adept at portraiture, he became Rome's most sought-after portraitist of the intellectuals and the nobility, earning recognition through exhibitions and awards that cemented his reputation in the international art community. Despite being alone in a foreign country, Concepcion found a community, a circle of friends and confidants in Italy, strangers connected through art and politics. Through his talents and amiable personality, he forged meaningful connections with artists, celebrities, nobility, and religious and public officials, whose private art collections include at least one of Tomas Concepcion's esteemed works.
