George Tsutakawa (1910-1997 Washington) "The Lloyd Center Fountain" (Horizontal) 1960-61 Hand Fabricated Bronze 5'x8.5'x2.2'. This is one of two highly important bronze fountains commissioned for the Lloyd Center Open Air Shopping Mall in Portland, Oregon in 1961 (Fountains were executed in 1960). It was his third public fountain commission after the Seattle Public Library "Fountain of Wisdom" and Renton Center Sculptured Fountain of 1960. George described these fountains as "semi abstract representations [of] fish, birds, and flowers" (Oregonian, July 31 1960). The elongated leaf-like platform has a single vertical flower form emanating from one end. His stacked forms (Obos) derived heavily from nature and are consistently paired with the works of fellow artist and friend, Isamu Noguchi. Initialed on tripod base "GTJU" for George Tsutakawa and George Uchida (his long-time engineer that helped him mount the fountains and ensure proper function). Deaccessioned from the mall due to remodel in the 1990's. Private collection, Washington State. Excellent functioning condition with professionally cleaned and waxed surfaces. These fountains can be seen in countless publications and online photos. One of his most important works to ever hit the public market by this Master of Fountains. George would produce over 70 fountains worldwide including major commissions in Japan, Canada, and across the US. Most notably his Song of the Forest Fountain 1981 (Sendai, Japan), Waiola Fountain 1966 (Ala Moana Center, Honolulu), Jefferson Plaza Fountain 1971 (Indianapolis, Indiana), and Fountain of Wisdom 1958-60 (Seattle Public Library). Recently his Joshua S. Green Sr. Fountain of 1966 was newly restored and reinstalled along the Seattle Waterfront. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a paramount piece of Japanese and Northwest Modernism.
