Richard Robbins (1927-2009), ▴ Richard Robbins (1927-2009), a bronze and aluminium standing figure, stamped 'RR', on a square plinth, 68cm high Richard Robbins was born in 1927. He attended King Alfred and University College Schools in London and, during the Second World War, New College School, Oxford and Dauntsey’s School in Wiltshire – which was known for its art education. After the war, he joined the Royal Artillery, but left in 1948 to read English at Oxford University, then painting at Goldsmiths’ College, Ruskin School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. After the Slade, Robbins combined making his own art with a career in teaching, first at Belmont School, Surrey, then at Camberwell College of Arts and finally at the Hornsey College of Art. He spent thirty-three years at Hornsey, becoming Head of Painting in 1984 and Head of Fine Art in 1990. He retired in 1993, at which point he was made Professor Emeritus.
