Standing Figure, 1956 signed with initials, "KA", bronze h. 45-1/4 in., Provenance: Descended through the family of the current owner, Dobbs Ferry, NY Literature: The Sculpture of Kenneth Armitage, London, 2016, no. 63, p. 109 (illustrated); Kenneth Armitage: Life and Work, London, 1997, p. 48 (illustrated) Produced while Armitage was working at his Notting Hill studio (1955-59), this bronze -- which has never before been offered at auction -- comes from a particularly inspired period in the artist's career. Armitage recalls the intensity in which he worked at the time, showing several of his larger pieces at the 1958 Venice Biennale: "I worked constantly, generally on larger work which seemed to go in series...I also made a series of reclining figures...two or three of which I also showed in the 1958 Venice Biennale, and there were one or two standing figures...and several smaller things, working constantly." The present work is one of these "one or two standing figures," and was on view at the 21er Haus (now a branch of the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere) in Vienna.
