Max Kalish (Polish/American, 1891-1945) Angry Christ Bronze, brown patina, inscribed 'M. KALISH' and stamped 'Meroni Radice/Cire Perdue/Paris' at base. Reporting on their hometown sculptor's recent sojourn to Paris, Cleveland newspapers in 1926 wrote: "Kalish has produced a piece that is certain to arouse unfavorable, as well as favorable comment. It is "The Risen Christ," in my opinion, the biggest thing he has done to date." When he returned from France with the sculpture, now called the "Angry Christ" newspapers noted the work had "caused a furor of discussion in Paris and New York...The bronze seems to vibrate with life. It possesses the rage of a tornado or the blinding and sudden illumination of a stroke of lightning." "Kalish's Christ is not the man of patient suffering who taught by precept and example, but the artist's conception of how Christ would react to present day surroundings, manners and customs." . H: 14 in. PROVENANCE: The Kalish family collection.
