Maria Lehnen’s early works are characterized by human-like sculptures, firmly wrapped and clearly reminiscent of mummies or archaic funerary rituals, that make us aware of the limitation of life. Another association is, however, the image of a cocoon that serves as precondition for the growth of life. Accordingly, the fascination for Maria Lehnen’s works is based on their existential value and three-dimensional presence. Similar bronze sculptures are, for instance, exhibited in the sculpture garden of the Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach in North Rhine-Westphalia.
