Maria Lehnen’s early works are characterized by human-like sculptures, firmly wrapped and clearly reminiscent of mummies or archaic funerary rituals, that make us aware of the limitation of life. Another association is, however, the image of a cocoon that serves as precondition for the growth of life. Accordingly, the fascination for Maria Lehnen’s works is based on their existential value and three-dimensional presence. Similar bronze sculptures are, for instance, exhibited in the sculpture garden of the Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach in North Rhine-Westphalia. Maria Lehnen (b. 1949) The German artist Maria Lehnen was born in North Rhine-Westphalia and studied at the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf, between 1973 and 1979. Here, she attended the class of the German sculptor Karl Bobek (1925-1992) and later became his master student. Examples of her artistic output belong to a number of private and public collections, including the Museum am Dom in Würzburg and the sculpture garden of the Städtische Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach.
