Very good condition Estimate $15,000-$20,000 The late Conceptual artist Richard Artschwager, who died in February, 2013 just a few days after the close of his retrospective at the Whitney Museum of Art, spent his career making paintings and sculptures out of the most unusual materials and unlikely subjects, such as, in this case, a hinge. The unusual placement of his sculptures was also a key element to his art process. Made of building materials such paint, wood, Formica, and chrome, “Corner" is designed to fit in the corner of a room where two walls adjoin. The last time “Corner” came up at auction in 2012, it fetched $22,500 at Bonham’s New York. Richard Artschwager (American, 1923-2013) Over the course of his career, painter and sculptor Richard Artschwager was associated with Pop, Op, Minimalist and Conceptual Art. Exploring visual space and everyday objects, Artschwager’s work fits uniquely within the oeuvre of 20th-century art history. Born in Washington, D.C., the artist studied chemistry and mathematics at Cornell University. In the early 1950s, Artschwager became involved in cabinetmaking which then expanded to included sculpture, painting, drawing, installation and photography. His first exhibition was held in 1959 at Art Directions Gallery, New York, followed by his first of many solo exhibitions with Leo Castelli in 1965. His work has been the subject of numerous important surveys, including two retrospectives at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Condition In overall good condition.
