Bronze, on wooden base Canada, after 1968 Sorel Etrog (1933-2014) – Romanian-Canadian sculptor, painter and costume designer On the base with stamp signature ‘ETROG’ Height: 32 cm Very good condition Sorel Etrog created this sculpture for the Canadian movie award Genie Award; comparable enameled figures are traded on the international auction market for up to €23,000 This is a copy of the Canadian movie award ‘Genie’ cast in bronze designed by Sorel Etrog in 1968. The standing torso is depicted with voluminous, straightened shapes that are reminiscent of earlier Cubist sculptures. The sculpture was initially modelled in wax in Florence and subsequently cast in bronze by the Michelucci Foundy in Pistoia, Italy. The first bronzes were gilt and had a navel as a borehole, which disappeared over the years. However, current example still possesses of this naval. The master silver and goldsmith Vickers Head was in charge of the production for a decade. The prize carried the name of the artist ‘Etrog Award’ until it was renamed in ‘Genie’ in 1980. Condition: The sculpture is in very good overall condition. On the pillar and the plinth are small scratches. On the edges are partially abrasions. The wooden base with traces of use. The height excluding the wooden base is 32 cm and including the wooden base 36 cm. Sorel Etrog (1933-2014) Sorel Etrog began his artistic education at the studio of Lobel in Romania until he emigrated to Israel in 1950, where he studied at the Avni Art Institute in Tel Aviv from 1953 until 1958. With the help of his first solo exhibition in Tel Aviv in 1958, he received a scholarship for the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York. He emigrated to Canada in 1963. He represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1966. He was commissioned to design the Canadian Film Award in 1968 that initially carried the name Etrog and was later renamed in Genie. He did book illustrations for e.g. Eugène Ionesco and Samuel Beckett. He became a Member of the Order of Canada in 1995 and Chevalier des arts et lettres in France in 1996.
