Bronze, red enamelled Canada, presumably 1970s Sorel Etrog (1933-2014) - Romanian-Canadian sculptor, painter and costume designer On the base with signature stamp 'ETROG' and numbered '7/7' Height: 34 cm Very good condition Characteristic abstracted-biomorphic bronze sculpture, consistent with the artist's sculpture that he created since the 1960s and that he additionally painted with enamel colors since the 1970s; comparable enameled figures are traded on the international auction market for up to €9,300 In the 1970s Sorel Etrog began combining his monotone abstract-biomorphic bronze sculptures with technical-mechanic elements like screws and threads. This becomes apparent in the present bronze cast sculpture, titled 'Ballerina', in the thread-like shapes of head, hip and legs. In the 1970s he also began painting the sculptures with industrial enamel colors, which in this case is a strongly luminous red. Condition: The sculpture is in very good overall condition. On the pillar are small scratches. On head and base with small scratches and faint abrasions. The total height is 34 cm. Sorel Etrog (1933-2014) Sorel Etrog began his artistic education at the studio of Lobel in Romania until he emigrated to Israel in 1950, where he studied at the Avni Art Institute in Tel Aviv from 1953 until 1958. With the help of his first solo exhibition in Tel Aviv in 1958, he received a scholarship for the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York. He emigrated to Canada in 1963. He represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1966. He was commissioned to design the Canadian Film Award in 1968 that initially carried the name Etrog and was later renamed in Genie. He did book illustrations for e.g. Eugène Ionesco and Samuel Beckett. He became a Member of the Order of Canada in 1995 and Chevalier des arts et lettres in France in 1996.
