Fondeur' Scratched number on the underside '394' Dimensions: c. 60 x 53 x 27 cm (height x width x depth) Good condition Well-known allegoric sculpture conceived by the French sculptor Georges Bareau; a copy of the present bronze figure has set the auction record of c. €9000.- The present bronze sculpture dates to the late 19th century and was cast after a sculpture by Georges Bareau, created in 1915. Manufactured by Ferdinand Barbedienne, one of the most famous bronze founder in France and specialized in small-sized reproductions of works by well-known artists, the present bronze reveals Georges Bareau's 'Allegory of History', represented by a young lady holding an unfolded parchment and seated on an element with an antique frieze. The bronze reveals a cast signature at the side of the plinth 'GEORGES - BAREAU'. The plinth also reveals the round foundry stamp on the backside 'Réduction Mécanique. A. Collas Brevete' as well as the inscription 'F. BARBEDIENNE. Fondeur'. Besides, the bronze shows the scratched number '394' on the underside. The bronze is in good condition considering its age. It measures c. 60 x 53 x 27 cm (height x width x depth). Georges Marie Valentin Bareau (1866-1931) Georges Marie Valentin Bareau was born in Paimbaeuf, in the South of Nantes. He received his artistic training at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he attended the classes of Charles Gauthier (1831-1891) and Gabriel-Jules Thomas (1824-1905). Since 1889 he repeatedly exhibited at the Paris Salon. His artistic output has been awarded many times, including the Gold Medal at the Paris World's Fair in 1900. Six years later, Bareau also became a member of the Legion of Honor. Examples of his sculptural works are exhibited, for instance, at the Musée de Nantes and at the Grand Palais in Paris.
