The current highest auction record for a similar animal bronze by Cartier is more than €5,000 This fine bronze group is the work of the French sculptor Thomas François Cartier (1879-1943) and shows a couple of wolfhounds standing on a naturalistic plinth. Animal depictions were Cartier's favorite subject. Besides hunting dogs, he depicted especially lions and big cats. His sculptures are characterized by a natural accomplishment, as can be seen in the present pair of dogs. Their watchful postures seem to capture the tension of the moment. The paw of one dog, laid across the back of the other animal, is a particular beautiful detail. The long hair of the dogs is worked with great craftsmanship and attention to detail. The bronze is signed in the cast with 'Cartier' on the plinth. It is in very good condition, showing only minor wear. The overall dimensions, including the base, are 42 x 38 x 24.5 cm. Thomas François Cartier (1879-1943) The French sculptor Thomas François Cartier was born 1879 in Marseille and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Georges Gardet (1863-1939). Cartier especially created animal sculptures of hunting dogs, lions and other big cats, characterized by their great accuracy.
