Verso on panel signed, dated and titled 'Doppel-Vibration' 'mack 58' with directional arrow. The present work 'Doppel-Vibration (Weißes Relief)' was created in 1958, the founding year of Zero. In the first edition of the magazine 'Zero', also published in 1958, Heinz Mack writes about his artistic approach, reflected for example in the present work: 'The conquering of the multitude of colour through the paint itself means that one gives up on the composition in favour of a simpler structure-zone. . . An example of such a structural element for me is the certain parallelism of a number of straight lines arranged vertically or horizontally. The texture of such straight lines is infinitely variable, the principle being the simultaneous and periodical succession of the lines. (The straight lines do not need to be exact). Each zone which is enclosed by two lines exhibits an endlessly rich structure of colour and form, and during the formation of these zones, coincidence is left to chance; the straight lines themselves are deliberately placed. The individual parallel zones alter from zone to zone gradually, whilst maintaining their designated and mutal characteristic; with this they appear to vibrate.' (Heinz Mack, quoted from: Karin Thomas, Heinz Mack, Recklinghausen 1975, p.9) Plaster on panel, painted white. In plexiglass box
