The bronze bears the inscription 'Prix de Rome', which the French artist was awarded in 1951. The janissaries were the bodyguards of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, which were abolished in 1826. Due to its detailed and expressive execution, the present janissary can be considered as high-quality bronze, which is also interesting because of its historical-documentary character. The figure is signed 'D. Debut' and marked with a foundry mark 'Bronze Garanti au Titre / Paris' on the base. On the front side of the base, there is a plaque with the title 'Janissaire' and the inscription 'Prix de Rome'. The figure is in good condition, showing only minor wear and oxidation marks. The overall height of the figure with base is 33 cm. (cko) Jean Didier Debut (1824-1893) Jean Didier Debut was a pupil of the French sculptor David d'Angers.
