(other cast) As early as 1957 Gerhard Marcks had already created the bronzes "Eselreiter" (Donkey Rider; Rudloff 670) and "Maultierreiter" (Mule Rider; Rudloff 671); like the present motif these are to be traced back to impressions from his first journey to Greece. Marcks also used the motif of the "Griechischer Eselreiter" for the figure of the riding Christ on the 1962 bronze doors for Bielefeld's Nikolaikirche (St Nicholas Church; Rudloff 783).
