Marc Aurele de Foy Suzor-Cote French/Canadian, 1869-1937 La Portaqeur, 1922 Signed m. a. Suzor-Cote, dated 1922, inscribed as titled and with the Roman Bronze Works, NY foundry mark and copyright Canada and U. States 1922 Bronze with dark brown patina Height 16 1/8 inches (41 cm) Provenance: Private collection Born in Quebec, Suzor-Cote first worked on church decorations before traveling to Paris, where he studied under Leon Bonnat and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, from 1891 to 1894 and from 1897 to 1901. In 1911, he began a practice of sculpting in the classical mode, inspired by the works of Maria Chapelaine. This 1922 realist bronze of weary soldier weighed down by a heavy load and carrying a gun was cast at Roman Bronze Works. Several of Suzor-Cote's bronzes may be found in the Musee des Beaux Arts in Montreal and in Ottawa. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
