작품 상세

Second half 19th century, French, signed ''F. Barbedienne Fondeur'' (Ferdinand Barbedienne 1810 - 1892 French) and with A. Collas Reduction Mechanique seal. Modeled after the antique, depicting two wrestlers in combat, on an integral base, 15.25'' H x 18'' W x 11'' D, est: $2000/3000. Note: The ancient Roman sculpture ''The Wrestlers'' is a marble copy of the long-lost Greek bronze dating from the 3rd century B.C. The Roman version was discovered in 1583, buried near Rome's Porta S. Giovanni, and subsequently purchased by the Medici family. It is now in the Uffizi collection in Florence and is considered the best Roman copy of a lost Hellenistic bronze. Many other artists have since made copies of it, including Philippe Magnier's marble version of 1684 - 1687 for the gardens of Versailles (now in the Louvre).
